Privacy Policy

Somni holds the most private thing a person writes down. The short version: there is no account, no analytics, and no advertising, and on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence your dreams are interpreted on the device and are never transmitted to anyone. One optional path sends dream text to a hosted model; it is described in full below.

We do not collect your data

Somni has no sign-up, no login, no user profile, and no user identifier. We could not associate a dream with a person if we wanted to, because there is no person on file. Specifically:

• Dreams, transcripts, readings and symbols are stored on your device by iOS, and mirrored to your own private iCloud database so they appear on your other devices. That is Apple's storage under your Apple ID, not ours; we cannot read it, and neither can Apple.
• Audio recordings are written to the app's own folder during capture and deleted once the dream is transcribed. “Keep audio” in Settings is off by default; switching it on retains the recording on the device so you can play it back. Either way the audio is never uploaded anywhere, and the folder is excluded from iCloud backup so it never consumes your quota.
• Settings, streaks and preferences are stored locally on your device.

We do not collect your name, email, contacts, location, photos, health data, advertising identifier, or any other personal information. There is no newsletter and we cannot email you.

Analytics and tracking: none

Somni links no analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting SDK. There is nothing counting your taps, no third-party framework in the app receiving anything about you, and the App Tracking Transparency prompt never appears because there is nothing to track.

When text leaves your device

There is one situation, and it never involves audio.

Interpretation needs a language model. On an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, Somni uses the on-device model and nothing is transmitted. On a device that cannot run it, the app offers a hosted model instead, and in that case the following is sent:

• The text of the dream, after email addresses and phone numbers have been removed. Names are deliberately kept — a dream about your brother has to stay a dream about your brother, and a name is not a way to contact anyone.
• A short digest of your journal — a bounded list of symbols that have recurred — so the reading can notice that the water has come back. It contains no dream text.
• The interpretation style you picked and the language to answer in.

The request goes to a Cloudflare Worker we operate, which forwards it to a language model provider (Anthropic or OpenAI). The Worker does not store your dream. It keeps two things: the finished reading for 24 hours under a one-time key, so that retrying after a dropped connection does not bill you twice or produce a second reading; and a salted counter used for rate limiting. Neither is linked to you, because there is nothing to link them to — the request is authorised by an App Store receipt that proves the copy of Somni is genuine, not who is holding it.

Anthropic and OpenAI process the text under their API terms, which exclude API data from training their models.

Permissions Somni requests

• Microphone — to record the dream you are speaking.
• Speech Recognition — to turn that recording into text. This runs on your device.
• Notifications (optional) — a morning reminder to write the dream down, and a reminder before a free trial ends. Scheduled locally; they contain no dream content.

You can revoke any of these in Settings → Somni at any time. Declining the microphone means you type instead of speak; nothing else changes.

Apple Intelligence

On supported hardware the reading is generated by Apple Intelligence's on-device foundation model. It runs entirely on your iPhone: the dream, the prompt and the response never leave it, and no part of that exchange reaches Apple, us, or anyone else.

Generated dream covers

Somni can illustrate a dream with a small cover image. Where the device supports it, this is produced by Apple's on-device Image Playground; otherwise the cover is an emoji and a colour drawn from the dream's mood. Either way it is generated on the device and stored with the dream.

Subscriptions and purchases

Somni Premium is sold through the App Store using Apple's StoreKit. Apple processes the transaction and shares only the receipt data the app needs to unlock Premium. We never see your Apple ID, payment method, or billing address. Apple's privacy policy applies to that transaction.

Third-party services

In default use on a supported device, the only external services involved are Apple's — iCloud, for syncing your own journal to your own account, and StoreKit, for purchases. If a hosted reading is used, two processors are added: Cloudflare, which hosts the relay, and the model provider (Anthropic or OpenAI) that writes the reading. There are no others.

Children

Somni is rated 12+ and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone, of any age, because we do not collect data.

Your rights

Because your journal is on your device and in your own iCloud, you control all of it:

• Delete one dream by swiping it away in the journal.
• Export everything from Settings, as a file you keep. Export is free and is not behind the subscription.
• Delete everything by deleting Somni from your iPhone, and removing its data from iCloud in Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage.

If you are in the EU or UK and wish to exercise GDPR rights — access, rectification, erasure, portability, objection — write to tepoyanpet@gmail.com. In practice there is nothing for us to return or erase: we hold no personal data on any server, so deleting the app and its iCloud data completes every one of those requests.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes and the app surfaces a notice at next launch.
